“Making the Most of World Heritage: Growing the Benefits, Avoiding the Pitfalls, Thinking Long Term”

We were delighted to welcome of the 2024 World Heritage UK annual conference in Cornwall on Monday 7th and Tuesday 8th October to the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth. Delegates came from across the UK to learn about and discuss “Making the Most of World Heritage: Growing the Benefits, Avoiding the Pitfalls, Thinking Long Term”. Day one of the two-day conference focussed on International & National Concepts and Ideas and the day began with a welcome from Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of World Heritage, UNESCO. The afternoon was spent experiencing a rather ‘atmospheric’ visit to the Tin Coast, thanks to authentic Cornish weather, exploring Geevor Tin Mine Museum and Levant Engine House to see the beam engine in steam. It was wonderful to welcome some of the Geevor team back to the evening event to share some of their Tales from Underground. 

Day two focussed on National & Local Examples and Case Studies and included the premiere of the new Cornish Mining World Heritage Site film produced by the Screen Cornwall team. At the end of day two, Cornish Metals hosted a fascinating visit to South Crofty Tin Mine.

 A very successful couple of days, a big thank you to the hard work of the World Heritage UK team in helping to organise the conference, the excellent speakers, the enthusiasm of the delegates and to Historic England and Cornish Metals for supporting the event.
